The Please Respond books are artist collaborations that begin with a drawing, and are passed back an forth between myself an another artist, each image building on the previous one - with no schedule and no rules. Each book has its own rhythm and logic, and provides a fascinating insight into the creative process, a document of an artistic conversation/improvisation, as it were. What began as exchanges with a few painters has expanded to include writers, photographers, sculptors, poets, installation artists, print-makers, architects, journalists, collage-artists and jazz musicians. There are 50+ completed books and again as many in process.
The books represent many tenets of life-long artistic engagement: a willingness to practice, a curiosity about different approaches, and a desire to share concepts. They also demonstrate that artistic research is grounded in active visual experimentation and exchange of ideas--core competencies for developing artists at Ohio Wesleyan.
